We are fully committed to sustainable development

Sustainability is at the heart of our work. We recognise our responsibility to protect and enhance the environment through sustainable development. By reducing our environmental impact, waste and use of resources, we plan to achieve our sustainable construction goals.

We’re ambitious about what we can achieve. Our efforts are guided by our net-zero carbon framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We’re on course to achieve the UK net-zero carbon building standard for our direct greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2030. Our journey will not always be an easy one. However, we are committed to collaborating with partners to adapt our approach, share knowledge and support innovation.

How we will embody the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals

We strive toward achieving sustainability using the following principles to steer our progress:

●    Building resilient infrastructure.
●    Fostering innovation with every project.
●    Using sustainable production methods.
●    Acting to combat climate change.
●    Protecting local ecosystems where we can.

We will use these goals, along with our net-zero carbon framework, to drive sustainability standards forward. Our aim is to create lasting impact across the development and construction industry for future generations.

Our sustainable construction methods will help use fewer natural resources

We aim to divert 99% of avoidable waste from landfill on our own construction sites. In addition, our HGV fleet is fully EUR06 compliant. We also actively conserve and enhance local environments, biodiversity and natural ecosystems as part of our sustainable urban developments.

Elsewhere, we work with the UK Green Building Council and Yorkshire Climate Action Coalition on climate change adaptation. Also, our climate working group works with our senior leaders – to challenge and then bring about the change we’re committed to.

Sustainable development FAQs

What is sustainable development?

Sustainable development means meeting today’s complex needs, without compromising the needs of future generations.

What is the UK Net-Zero Carbon Buildings Standard?

The UK Net-Zero Carbon Buildings Standard helps us prove that our building assets are net-zero carbon and in line with UK climate targets. The steps to successfully fulfilling the Standard criteria are:

1.    Establish net-zero carbon scope.
2.    Reduce construction impacts.
3.    Reduce operational energy use.
4.    Increase the renewable energy supply.
5.    Offset any remaining carbon.

Why is sustainability important in construction?

Sustainability is an important part of the construction industry because it helps mitigate any potential environmental impact. Taking a sustainable approach allows us to minimise resource depletion, lower carbon emissions and contribute to a healthy and resilient local ecosystem.

How can construction be more sustainable?

Construction can be more sustainable by:

●    By using low-carbon materials
●    Improving energy efficiency
●    Reducing waste
●    Designing buildings for long-term use and adaptability.

Is steel sustainable in construction?

Steel can be sustainable when used efficiently. It's durable, recyclable, and often reused, but its production is energy-intensive and emits carbon. Using recycled steel and low-carbon manufacturing methods improves its sustainability
