I bought a Victorian cottage in June 2020 as a renovation project. It took 4 months to complete and I now call it home. I was attracted to the property for its quirks and character charm; however, it needed a lot of work and we had a few unwanted surprises along the way. Not to mention the struggle to buy plaster in lockdown. The original decor boasted a multicoloured jigsaw vinyl floor in the bathroom, everyone was surprised that I didn’t want to keep it, haha.

Describe a typical day in your job role?

I look after several projects on a day to day basis, which could involve delivering the next stage of the planning and development strategy for a site, technical workshops or being on the phone to a consultant, landowner or agent.  Otherwise, I will be out on the road investigating and searching for new development opportunities inclusive of undertaking site visits, preparing land proposals or hopefully attending a landowner interview.

A typical day for me is processing subcontractor orders and rectifying any issues with them. It can involve communicating directly with the subcontractor and the Quantity Surveyor. My hobby of travelling the UK and abroad, taking photos of derelict buildings and demolitions.  I have scrapbooked some of these and got them published in cardmaking/scrapbooking magazines.  Please don’t ask how many photos I have because it’s thousands.

Sales Administrator
Describe a typical day in your job role?

My typical day begins at 8.45am. The very first job I do before I sit down is to make everyone in my department a drink. I switch my computer on and I do the next day deliveries/contracts on the Mcs system.  I answer incoming calls taking hires for accommodation units and also sales enquiries for sales of accommodation units, following these up with sales quotation. I am responsible for the purchasing of all material orders, wood, electrical, plumbing etc raising and placing orders with suppliers. Sorting out of invoice queries for our accounts. I pass all the purchase invoices and rehire invoices for our department, for payment. I am very busy with taking and writing up orders for our Banner Loo Events, arranging deliveries and collections and rehiring equipment that event organisers require and taking instructions from the Banner Loo Sales Manager to make sure these events go smoothly.  I make sure that all events are paid for before delivery by taking card payments on the card machine. Our Sales Representative use me as their internal contact to type up their quotations and write up their orders they have taken whilst on the road.

Describe a typical day in your job role?

My days are very varied, but it normally starts at around about 7am with a call from a customer while I’m having Breakfast, telling me that they need my help as they’ve forgotten to order something, and they need it that morning. The funny thing is the depot doesn’t really open till 7.30am, but normally I can get hold of someone around about 7.00am.

I normally call into a depot and catch up with the guys, grab a cup of tea and try to catch up on my emails and fill in my call report, which is sometimes difficult as my phone is constantly stuck to my ear with customer either placing orders, enquiring where equipment is or complaining that something isn’t working right. However, that’s all part of the fun of the job, I like to get to see about 8 customers a day, this may vary from offices to sites and if I’m lucky I may be able to grab a spot of lunch with a customer or definably a cuppa. I really enjoy the characters that you meet in the industry, some are so funny and make my day and cheer me up as sometimes the role can be extremely stressful.

I’m constantly on the phone all day, either to the depots, suppliers or to customers, I’m hiring out everything from a small drill to a 18m scissor lift, every now and then I’ll bump into another rep from another company and we’ll chew the fat. Sometimes it feels like a game to see if you can get 1 over on your them by seeing can having your equipment on site. Which is a great buzz.

I normally finish around about 5pm, however my phone doesn’t stop, as I’m guaranteed to get a call from a customer after a bit of equipment for the morning or a chin wag while they’re on the way home.

What makes Henry Boot Group of Companies a great place to work?

Well I’ve been fortunate to work and meet some nice people some at Banner and some in the other subsidiaries, I like that fact that it’s hasn’t lost its family roots feeling but in the same time. The company is looking and doing something about some of the challenges that face us in our everyday life i.e. carbon footprints the new Diversity & inclusion group. I think it’s great. It’s certainly a company that looks after it’s staff and supports them with a lot of the initiatives that you see through smile platform and the company extranet.

Describe a typical day in your job role?

There is no such thing as a typical day in my role; it could be an early morning train into London and a brisk walk into the office admiring that architecture on route; a meeting with a landowner concerned that he / she is going to get best value; a design workshop with a technical team creating the building blocks for communities that people can call home, business hubs for budding entrepreneurs, warehouses to serve the ever-expanding online economy or specialist accommodation for the elderly; a coffee with a planning consultant developing a strategy; a one to one with the Principal of an esteemed College understanding the legacy they aspire to achieve; a chat at home with a landed Estate family who have for generations invested in their community and who want to follow this tradition whilst still realising some revenue to invest back into the Estate; A meeting in a Parish Hall, explaining to the Parish Council and local residents the merits of the scheme; A site visit in the rain; it always seems to rain when I am out on site; A technical discussion with a housebuilder; I manage a team of four vibrant and enthusiastic professionals who are successfully growing our portfolio and keep me on my toes and I work with a network on specialists in a broad range of fields.
