Road Link (A69) Limited have a 30 year contract with the Highways England to operate and maintain the A69 trunk road between Carlisle and Newcastle. This long-term contract was one of the first awarded via the Government’s Private Finance Initiative. The Highways England continually monitors performance to ensure the A69 is a well-maintained, safe and reliable route.
The A69 Carlisle to Newcastle trunk Road is the major east west route serving the north east of England. The A69 between the A1 in the east and the M6 in the west, provides an important link in the strategic road network, linking the industrial areas of the North East England and Teesside with the North West of England, the West of Scotland and, via the west coast ports, with Ireland. It also provides a route to the Lake District for holiday traffic. The route has been designated a part of the Trans European Road Network.
Identified and planned works by Road Link include road resurfacing, bridge repairs, winter preparation and routine maintenance including landscape works, sign cleaning and litter picking. Emergency incidents have also been handled at the request of the police. All works are planned well in advance so as delays to traffic is minimised.
